British photographer Tim Hetherington has won this year’s prestigious World Press Photo Contest. His photograph of a US soldier in the Korengal Valley in the Eastern province of Afghanistan beat over 80,000 other images submitted this year. First prize in the spot news singles category went to American photographer John Moore of Getty Images who captured the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. First prize in the contemporary issues singles category was won by South African photographer Brent Stirton. While working for Newsweek he pictured the evacuation of dead Mountain Gorillas at Virunga National Park, Eastern Congo. Agence France Presse photographer Roberto Schmidt came second in the spot news stories section with this picture taken in Nairobi, Kenya. Third prize in the sports action stories went to Chris Detrick of The Salt Lake Tribune. The winners of the World Press Photo 2007 contest were announced in Amsterdam, Netherlands, 08 February 2008. 1st prize People in the News Stories Philippe Dudouit, Switzerland, for Time magazine.
